GLASGOW – The Impact Investing Institute is delighted to announce a series of new adopters and supporters to our Impact Investing Principles for Pensions, highlighting the role that pension schemes can play in the transition to Net Zero.

Pension schemes SmartCollegia and River & Mercantile have adopted the Principles, committing to integrating impact investing into their investment strategies. Impact investments are made with an explicit intention to generate positive, measurable social and environment impact alongside a financial return. The Investor Forum has also signed up as a supporter of our Principles.

Our Principles have now been adopted by pension schemes with a total of more than £16.8bn of assets. With 1% of pension savings across the 37 OECD countries representing $320bn, there is great potential for pension schemes to drive the transition to a Net Zero economy while making a financial return.

Jamie Broderick, Director and Lead Expert of the Impact Investing Institute, commented:

“We are delighted that Smart, Collegia and River & Mercantile have adopted the Principles and that The Investor Forum will support them going forwards. During COP26, it has never been more vital to consider how big pools of capital such as pension schemes can support a Just Transition to Net Zero.”

We run an active community of pension scheme, investment consultant and industry supporters of our Principles – with details of how to sign up here. We also publish evidence on the investment case for impact investments that are suitable for pension schemes, such as social housing.
