Alan Smith is First Church Estates Commissioner since October 2021. He chairs the Church Commissioners’ Assets Committee, the statutory committee responsible for the strategic management of the Church of England’s in-perpetuity endowment fund. He is former Global Head of Risk Strategy and Chief of Staff to the Group Chief Risk Officer at HSBC Group plc.
Alan was a member of the Social Impact Advisory Group appointed by HM Treasury and DCMS over 2025 to support the development of a new UK Social Impact Investment vehicle. He is an advisor and angel investor to Astia, a venture fund pioneering investing in companies led by women. He is a board trustee of the Global Association of Risk Professionals and an advisor to the ACE Programme, a UK national charity with the mission to make cricket more inclusive and accessible.
