Establishing a sustainability reporting standard to encourage investment into social housing

Social and affordable housing plays a crucial role in improving lives and strengthening communities throughout the UK. But providers have often struggled to demonstrate their credentials and attract investment.

A new framework

To  increase investment into social housing, we helped develop the Sustainability Reporting Standard for Social Housing. This voluntary reporting framework aims to help housing providers attract investors with a sustainability mandate by reporting their environmental, social, and governance performance in a transparent, consistent and comparable way. Launched in late-2020, the Standard has been adopted by more than 100 housing providers and funders.

Adopters say that the Standard has improved their credibility with current and prospective lenders and investors, and has become the ‘go-to’ reporting framework for social housing providers.

To oversee and promote the implementation of the Standard, a new company has been set up. Sustainability for Housing has a board of experienced professionals from the housing and financial services sectors. It will guide the Standard’s future development, helping to ensure it stays up-to-date with market and regulatory trends.
